Considering a German Shepherd for my first dog?

I have owned dogs before with my family but I am looking for a dog for just me. I have been doing a lot of research and I like the GSD but I am afraid that he might be to much for a first time dog. I have also considered a boxer. What are yalls thoughts? I want a larger dog so no mini schnauzer or pug comments
